A winner of the inaugural Pulitzer Prize in two journalism categories for both his work as a science writer, Jon Franklin explains “A Story Structure” in the novel.
“Meaning is intrinsic to storytelling.”
Journalism lacks meaning in its story, it is just about reporting and presenting facts along with some form of data. Narratives are selective in the information that is presented to ensure that there is a sense of meaning behind it all.
Franklin believes that narrative writers are able to bring meaning to journalism and I completely agree with him. To find meaning means to view a situation from a more real-world stand point; you’re not looking for something critically or even logically, but just in a new found perspective that means something to those it affects.
If you think about it, that is all journalism is about but because of the way it is reported, in such a stern and straightforward way, the meaning is lost in a shuffle to just get the news out there.
“Like a lot of other writers, I soon grew frustrated by the limitations of journalism.”
For a field whose principles are so broad and should allow for such flexibility, journalism is pretty restricted in how and what i reported. Journalism lacks a story-telling detail that I believe readers indulge in.
There isn’t an article or a broadcast that does not have a significant point of change, conflict, a conclusion or other elements of a story therefore, a narrative story can be revived from a simple article.
“We like stories because we think in stories.”
We naturally think of events, the meaning behind these occurrences, significant points of change etc.
Life is a story, a roller coaster of one but one with a beginning, middles and an end. We like stories and should not veer off from what we know and what we naturally indulge in. Stories should be incorporated into journalism because then it becomes global stories and what’s more exciting than a global story?
