Integrating Technology Effectivley in the Teaching Profession

Technology can be used in ways to help prompt leaning and critical thinking. Being able to integrate technology, like books other than textbooks (graphic novels) and media literacy into the teaching practice is one way to help the students widen their thought on how to look at new content, and seeing how other kinds of texts get their point across but using printed or illustrated texts. In the article Media literacy, graphic novels and social issues by Gretchen Schwarz, she mentions “media literacy can help young people challenge information about society, detect prejudice and inequality, seek diverse points of view and engage with different social issues” (2007). By integrating different technology platforms, it can help engage the students even more and can benefit their learning immensely rather than just reading text books and listening to long lectures.

Many of my university teachers have integrated technology into their classrooms very creatively. For instance, for one of my classes we needed to come up with our ideal school through a media outlet. My group decided to create a video where we filmed, added pictures and recorded our voices to portray what our school would look like. I find this was such a great idea because it allowed us to do something different and it was much more effective than writing our school down on paper. Being in a group, we were a lot more engaged and we had to really think of what we wanted the school to look like and consist of because it would be shown in front of the class. Another way that technology has been integrated into my learning is by sketch noting. Rather than writing down notes from a class on a piece of paper we were able to use our laptops to drawn and be creative while writing down our notes with illustration. This worked very well because it’s your own interpretation of what you’re taking note of, and by sketching it down it’s easier to remember and understand for the future.

In addition to my own learning and how some of my teachers have used technology, I can see myself bringing these sorts of technology software’s and services into my future classroom; while emphasizing on one of the 5 ISTE standards for teachers:

“1.Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity. Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments.

  1. b) Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources” (2015)

This is important to me because I want to be a teacher who uses different teaching methods and integrates technology effectively. I would first need to educate myself more on how to use these sorts of software’s so that I can help my students out if they have problems. And it would be easier for me to come up with projects if I know the software well. I find it also important to bring real world issues into light by using technology software like, WordPress. Where my students are able to write blogs about how they feel or their thoughts on certain issues. Or even use the software Toondoo to get them to create their own graphic texts illustrating about certain issues.

All in all, as a future teacher I know how important it is to integrate technology into my classroom. I’ve seen many positive outcomes on my first stage when a teacher introduced multimedia projects. If teachers can combine school work with technology, students will become a lot more engaged. I will definitely set up a platform for my students where they have the chance to blog, sketch note, create graphic novels and make movies while at the same time addressing world issues. Also I can use technology to create my own lesson plans which can be a lot more interesting for the students to listen to. Ending on a very important statement that Schwart had stated “beyond passing standardized tests, students today need to engage with social issues and media literacy, critical thinking about information/ communications and about society if our democracy is to have a future” (2007). It shows that it’s not only important to know the multiplication table by heart but as well as understanding and thinking critically with what’s going on around the world. That is why bringing in technology into a classroom efficiently can be very beneficial to the students.
