Behind the scenes

Two scenarios opened my eyes today in how people or organizations work behind the scenes to generate a favorable outcome.

First, on Monday, media outlets announced Mississippi State University hired Ben Howland to become its new basketball coach. Later that day while listening to national columnist Gary Parrish, I got an idea of how Howland, whose prior stops including Pittsburgh and UcLA, landed in Starkville. Parrish credits Adidas for playing a role in the matter. He used the timeline to support his case. Former coach was informed Saturday morning that his contract was terminated. Less than 48 hours later, reports surfaced placing Howland at MSU. And this occurred without hiring a search firm. Coincidentally, MSU and UCLA share a common bond- Adidas endorsements.

While Howland, who led the Bruins to 3 consecutive Final Four appearances, fell out of favor with the UCLA brass says Parrish, he maintained a strong tie with Adidas. And Adidas benefits from their school having a great basketball program, so they seemingly assisted in placing Howland.

The second example comes courtesy of the James Altucher show. On his podcast, Altucher interviewed Steve. Steve, or SJ, was one of the topselling nonfiction writers on Amazon despite the fact he doesn’t have a literary agent, big publishing house, or bestseller list backing him. He has churned out a series of eBooks which net him $20,000 – $40,000 per month in revenue.

Altucher asked Steve what marketing methods proved successful, and the first one he referenced was Kindle itself. Kindle benefits from Steve selling books, so it’s in their best interests to help out.

These are two unique examples, but I found them to compliment one another.
