Oni Press Announces Sanrio Graphic Novels for “Lazy Egg”

Oni Press, which has had great success with licensed publications, has announced a new deal. They will be working with Sanrio (home of Hello Kitty and many other merchandise characters) to put out a series of comic books featuring Gudetama, the “lazy egg”. (I discovered the character at this year’s TCAF, and I found him adorable, particularly when napping on a bed of rice as sushi. You more often see him uncooked, though, as a yolk.) Oni will put out [...]

After Delay, Wynonna Earp Resumes Production

Wynonna Earp — the TV show airing on Syfy, produced by IDW, and based on a comic series — ran into some snags earlier this year. Production was delayed on the upcoming fourth season, and speculation had it that it was due to money problems at IDW Entertainment. However, in early July, it was announced that production was greenlit to start this fall, with Season 4 airing in Summer 2020. IDW was aided by more money from Syfy as “the [...]

Sanity & Tallulah

“The future is female,” they say, and nothing demonstrates that better than Sanity & Tallulah, a science fiction adventure by Molly Brooks about two smart, daring girls living on a space station. Super-creative Sanity has genetically engineered a three-headed kitten named “Princess Sparkle, Destroyer of Worlds”. Having a pet is a rule violation in such a tightly controlled environment, particularly one that’s a science experiment created using untested equipment, and Tallulah’s mother, the senior scientist on the station, grounds them [...]

Science Comics: Polar Bears: Survival on the Ice

Science Comics: Polar Bears: Survival on the Ice, another installment of First Second’s excellent non-fiction graphic novel series, dives deep into the life of one of the world’s most distinctive animals. It’s written by Jason Viola and illustrated by Zack Giallongo. Anik and Ila are sibling polar bear cubs. As they spat with each other and follow Mama around the Arctic, the reader learns in great detail the nature of life in such a harsh environment. The book covers types [...]

Sleepless Volume 2

I was heavily disappointed to hear this wonderful fantasy romance would end after only 11 issues. However, looking on the bright side, that makes for a complete story in two collections, a tidy but not over-committed read. It does mean, though, that events move very quickly in Sleepless volume 2, the second half of the series by Sarah Vaughn and Leila Del Duca. Poppy is dealing with a number of substantial challenges. With her father no longer king and her [...]

Good Omens

If anyone’s left around here, you may have wondered where I’ve been for the past week or more. I became completely obsessed with Good Omens, which dropped six hour-long episodes on Amazon prime video at the end of May. I’ve already watched it three times so far — once straight through, once just for more of the Boyfriends (and to better understand the setup for a plot twist), and once to share with friends. (Brunch party, with red wine for [...]

Is There a Need for Vertigo These Days?

Rumors were circulating over the past week that DC will be shutting down Vertigo. The imprint, which launched in 1993, was created for more mature content, and over the years, it’s been the home of some revolutionary titles (mostly horror and fantasy related), including Sandman, Swamp Thing, and Preacher. However, these days, the Comic Code Authority no longer exists, so there’s less need for a strong wall between types of comics; the visionary editors who gave Vertigo its unique feel [...]

Kate Leth Celebrates an Important Anniversary

Kate Leth has posted to her Patreon a comic called “Dry Spell: A Year Without Drinking”. In addition to her self-character bat being adorable, she brings forward some important points about why this was the right decision for her. I think many of us can relate to this panel, in particular: But there are a bunch more ways to deal with those things than alcohol, if that’s not what you want to do. Bravo to her!
