Magical History Tour: The Great Pyramid, The Great Wall of China

Magical History Tour Volume 1: The Great Pyramid and Magical History Tour Volume 2: The Great Wall of China are the first two volumes of a new history-based graphic novel line from Papercutz. The unusual format of the Magical History Tours is a great choice for its audience. The small, affordable hardcovers are perfect for tucking in a bag for on-the-go learning and surviving multiple reads. Both are written by Fabrice Erre and illustrated by Sylvain Savoia. In each installment, [...]

Wizard World Returns In-Person With Chicago Show, Adding to Already Crowded 2021 Con Calendar

It has been announced that Wizard World Chicago will be held as a live event October 15-17 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois. There is no word yet on who will be exhibiting, which guests will be appearing, what tickets will cost, or any other specifics. But given how quickly shows are staking out weekends in the last quarter of the year, it’s important for a major show to get on the calendar. We’re told more [...]

Enigma Returns From Berger Books

Enigma by Peter Milligan and Duncan Fegredo was one of the Vertigo imprint launch titles. The eight-issue miniseries was first released in 1993. Collected in 1995, I recommended it in 2006. It’s an astounding story about dreams and superheroes and imagination and childhood heroes as inspiration to acknowledge one’s true self. Now, the Dark Horse imprint Berger Books is bringing out Enigma: The Definitive Edition (October 2021, $24.99), a hardcover collection with extras “including development art, color sketches, and behind-the-scenes [...]

Cartoon Crossroads Columbus Announces Tom Spurgeon Award, Show Plans

Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (CXC) has announced that their plans this year will incorporate a combination of in-person and online events and will take place from September 30 to October 3 in Columbus, Ohio. Announced guests so far include * Shary Flenniken (Trots and Bonnie) * Victoria Jamieson (Roller Girl) * Chris Samnee (Daredevil) * Lewis Trondheim (too many to list) But the announcement I found intriguing was the Tom Spurgeon Award, “named after CXC’s founding executive director [who passed away [...]

Diamond Pullbox Now Available

After first being announced back in 2018, as of yesterday, Diamond’s Pullbox online service is now available. It’s intended to be an easy way for potential customers to track what’s coming in to their local comic shop and to send them orders for more items. But you don’t have to have a shop connection to use it. I set it up to track a few release items through Diamond — and already, I found that a manga series I like [...]

Tokyo Fashion: A Comic Book

That subtitle is a little misleading, as this is more of a scrapbook with comic strips included. Tokyo Fashion by Nodoka has 44 suggestions on “how to look stylish when you’ve got zero time to think about it!” (Plus, four for men, although they’re weirdly specific.) Each tip is accompanied by a couple of outfit drawings and a short (3-4 panel) comic strip in which the protagonist takes advice from her cat. Of course, the usefulness of any style advice [...]

Tillie Walden Needs an Editor: Spinning and On a Sunbeam

Two Tillie Walden books have been holding down the edge of my to-do stack table for years now. And they work well in that function, as Spinning (2017) is just under 400 pages, and On a Sunbeam (2018) is over 540! These are bricks of books, is what I’m saying. Walden does gorgeous art, spare and thought-provoking and expressive, in a variety of genres. Spinning is an autobiography, the story of her time as a teenage figure skating competitor and [...]

My Brother’s Husband Volume 2

My Brother’s Husband volume 2 concludes the short, inspirational manga series by Gengoroh Tagame. Mike is still visiting Yaichi and his daughter Kana. (Mike was married in Canada to Yaichi’s twin brother, who has passed away.) Mike’s visit has caused Yaichi to start thinking about what it might be like to be gay and to begin recognizing the stereotypes and distrust visible in Japanese culture. As the book opens, Yaichi has had a dream about Kana perhaps growing up to [...]
