Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju Volume 5

After spending most of books 2-4 on flashbacks to the 1940s-50s apprenticeship of two young rakugo artists, Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju volume 5 wraps up that story tragically. (Rakugo is a monologue storytelling performance.) We find out what happened to the talented but erratic Sukeroku and how his fellow apprentice Yakumo wound up with his daughter Konatsu. Just as Yakumo has come to new understanding about the nature of connection and the need for other people in one’s [...]

Will iZombie Have Another Season?

I probably shouldn’t have used that headline, since the answer to headline questions is usually “no”, but I hope that’s not the case. However, last month, the CW renewed all of their comic book shows — Riverdale (for season 3), Arrow (season 7), Black Lightning (season 2), Legends of Tomorrow (season 4), The Flash (season 5), and Supergirl (season 4) — except for iZombie. The fun procedural is in its fourth season, and it’s doing some weird things, turning Seattle [...]

Sleepless #6

Sleepless has continued to be a satisfying fantasy series that wraps together themes of family, devotion, and politics. This latest issue concludes the first arc with several surprising twists around the relationship between the princess and her sleepless knight protector. Writer Sarah Vaughn provides depth to the royal machinations beyond the obvious motivations. I really feel for Poppy, placed in an untenable position due to the death of her father the King, as she tries to navigate between attempted assassinations [...]

Are Iron Man Variant Covers a New Low in Creativity or a Clever Way to Block Shelf Space?

Tony Stark is going to be back as Iron Man in the comics — which makes sense, since that’s who the mass, movie-going audience thinks should be in the armor. To promote the release of Tony Stark Iron Man #1, written by Dan Slott, illustrated by Valerio Schiti, and out this June, Marvel has announced 20 variant covers. You’ll notice, from the gallery below, that there’s an odd similarity to them. Looks like someone has been having fun with Photoshop. [...]
