All’s Faire in Middle School

The much-anticipated new book by the author of Roller Girl, Victoria Jamieson, similarly takes experience from her life to craft an appealing story for middle-school girls. All’s Faire in Middle School is the story of Imogene, worried about entering middle school after being home-schooled. Complicating things is how involved her family is in the local Renaissance Faire. Dad plays a knight, while Mom runs a craft booth. Imogene has just begun training to be a squire, which makes her a [...]

Viz Reprinting 20th Century Boys in Hardcover

Viz Media announced at New York Comic Con, among many other bits of news, that they will be re-releasing another series by Naoki Urasawa, as they did for his Monster. While that reprint consisted of double-length softcovers, the 20th Century Boys re-release will be in hardcover. The series ran in English as 22 volumes published from 2009-2012, and based on the comment “This will be our version of the kanzenban hardcover deluxe edition”, this new reprint edition should be 11 [...]

The Archies Will Meet the Monkees

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that The Archies #4 will send the group back in time to meet the Monkees in the 1960s. The issue is due out in January 2018. Alex Segura, co-writer of the series, tells Heat Vision that the two bands are “a perfect pairing, and they resonate in really similar ways — embracing pop sensibilities, crossing over from different mediums and just channeling the most fun parts of whatever they’re doing, be it TV, music, comics, [...]

Oni Ditches Diamond for Bookstore Distribution

Over the years, several mid-size graphic novel publishers have selected Diamond Book Distributors, in existence since 2001, for their bookstore market distribution. I suspect the thinking might have been that Diamond was already handling their publications for the comic shop direct market, so why not consolidate to avoid additional shipping, storage, and other costs? However, as more business is done in the general bookstore market, particularly for publishers of diverse works and/or those targeted at audiences beyond the young adult [...]

iZombie: The Complete Third Season

iZombie: The Complete Third Season, available on Tuesday, has the 13 episodes of this season on a well-priced DVD set. (The Blu-ray is available through Warner Archive. The studio, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, provided me with a free review copy of this DVD set. My opinions below are mine.) At the end of last season, there was a massive zombie outback as military contractor Fillmore Graves took over energy drink producer (and zombie creator) Max Rager. After surviving that, season [...]

Science Comics: Plagues: The Microscopic Battlefield

The most recent Science Comics entry in the First Second line of excellently readable educational graphic novels is Plagues: The Microscopic Battlefield by Falynn Koch (who also wrote and drew the Bats volume). It uses the framework of scientists working within a computer simulation to personalize various cells, germs, and processes when the human body gets infected, including Yellow Fever, Bubonic Plague, and a white blood T-Cell. Scientists are trying to enlist harmful germs in attempts to develop new vaccines. [...]

Mining for Justice

Mining for Justice is the eighth book in Kathleen Ernst’s Chloe Ellefson mystery series set at a series of Wisconsin historical sites during the 1980s. This time, it’s Pendarvis, a site about the experiences of immigrant lead miners from Cornwall in the 1830s. These skilled miners helped settle the area, since they brought families. (Pendarvis only exists today due to the restoration and preservation efforts of a gay couple in the 1930s, but you won’t hear about that here, although [...]
