Tales of the Tendo Family Volume 1

I don’t read historical manga much any more, as I find not understanding the references off-putting. I gave this a try because a smart editor mentioned to me that it was by Ken Saito, author of The Name of the Flower, which I remembered enjoying when CMX put it out 15 years ago. I’m glad I did, because this setup is intriguing. Tales of the Tendo Family is out next week from One Peace Books. The characters are a bit [...]

Exclusive Preview: Usagi Yojimbo: The Crow #1

Out next week, on April 3, is Usagi Yojimbo: The Crow #1, the first issue of a five-part miniseries. Per the publisher, Dark Horse, in this story, Usagi and Yukichi rescue a merchant being attacked by bandits, only to discover that the person they rescued is a criminal with a huge reward. Which means the bounty hunters Gen and Stray Dog and others are also after him! As always, the series is written and illustrated by Stan Sakai, with colors [...]

Sheridan Bell and the Vanishing Beast

The easiest way to get me to read something new these days is to tell me how much you were influenced by Sherlock Holmes. (This should not surprise my readers.) I found Sheridan Bell and the Vanishing Beast at the recent “Nerd Made: Madison“, put on by Madison Makers Market. It was kind of an arts and crafts fair for geeks. The author, Em Rowene, had a table and explained to me how the main character here, Sheridan Bell, was [...]

Mrs. Watson: Untold Stories

I found the author’s previous Sherlockian work, My Dear Watson, a chore to get through, but this followup took a different approach that I much preferred. In that earlier book by L.A. Fields, the premise is that Holmes and Watson are lovers, and the un-first-named Mrs. Watson knows that. The book then consists of her making jealous remarks about them while retelling great amounts of existing stories and cases. She doesn’t like Holmes much at all, for obvious reasons, and [...]

Two New Sherlock Holmes Game Books Coming

I absolutely love the Sherlock Holmes Graphic Novel Adventures. They’re comics *and* choose-your-own-path mysteries *and* game books (with a score based on whether you solve the case). So I was thrilled to find out that two more volumes are coming to join the six already released. It’s been a couple of years since the last, Sherlock Holmes International, came out. Publisher Van Ryder Games is currently crowdfunding a new set of books. (There are other volumes in the GNA series, [...]

What Did You Eat Yesterday? Volume 20

Isn’t that a lovely seasonal cover from when this came out last year? Too bad there is no Halloween party in the book — the costumes are terrific for their personalities. It has taken me so long to tell you why Fumi Yoshinaga’s What Did You Eat Yesterday? volume 20 is terrific because I can’t think of new reasons it’s wonderful. I already, in my review of volume 19, talked about how great it is to see comfortable stories about [...]

Oni Releasing Wet Moon Omnibus for Series Anniversary

It’s been almost twenty years since Sophie Campbell launched Wet Moon, a Southern Gothic graphic novel series about girls in art school that’s like nothing else out there. To celebrate that anniversary, Oni Press has announced a series of remastered omnibus collections. There will be three books, starting in November, with new cover art and introductions. Wet Moon 20th Anniversary Omnibus volume 1 will reprint the first two books, Feeble Wanderings and Unseen Feet, at a larger size. (There were [...]

Recipes for Murder: 66 Dishes That Celebrate the Mysteries of Agatha Christie

What a brilliant idea! Not only are the dishes in Karen Pierce’s Recipes for Murder: 66 Dishes That Celebrate the Mysteries of Agatha Christie inspired by the great writer’s novels, they’re also chosen with awareness of the year the book was published. That means techniques and dishes dating from the appropriate period, which also makes this cookbook something of a social history. The author aims to consider “how Christie uses food in her novels, whether to advance plots or define [...]

Cat+Gamer Volume 4

Just when I was getting a little bored with “everyday life with a cat” stories — which is why I reviewed volume 1 and volume 2 but not volume 3 — the author, Wataru Nadatani, shakes things up in Cat+Gamer volume 4 by introducing a second cat! This shouldn’t be a spoiler, since that’s the kitty on the cover. Cat owner Riko has befriended the woman from the pet store, who mentions how lots of people have two cats, as [...]
