Heart Takes the Stage: A Heart of the City Collection

The comic strip Heart of the City, created by Mark Tatulli, debuted in 1998. In 2020, the strip was passed to Steenz, and the little girl named Heart went to middle school. This volume, Heart Takes the Stage, is the first collection of Steenz’s strips. I was curious to read the collection because I’d never heard of the comic (as I stopped reading the newspaper several years ago), and I liked Steenz’s work on Archival Quality. Plus, the idea of [...]

Cat Massage Therapy Volume 3

It’s usually around the third volume that I start wondering if a series has legs. The idea behind Cat Massage Therapy by Haru Hisakawa is pretty simple, after all: having cats walk or sleep on you is relaxing. Could this concept support three books? Yes, it turns out. Cat Massage Therapy volume 3 was a pleasure to read, a relaxing escape. The second book introduced some new “cast members” (cats), so this one just lets them do their things. I [...]

I’m in a Book of Sherlockian Monster Essays: Monstrum Opus Now Available

I’m very pleased to be one of the 17 contributors to The Monstrum Opus of Sherlock Holmes: A Compendium of Horrors Dr. Watson Dared Not Tell, a new collection of essays revealing the monsters secretly appearing in the Sherlock Holmes mystery stories. Monsters include werewolves, shapeshifters, Cthulu, Mr. Hyde, Dorian Gray, Gozer, and the Wicked Witch of the West. My particular piece deals with “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” (you know, the one with the snake, but that’s not [...]

Asylum

You know what we don’t have enough stories about? Good friends. That’s why I loved Asylum, that, and the nerd culture setting. The graphic novel is written by Greg Means, illustrated by Kazimir Lee, and published by Tugboat Press. Allen and Zekia are best friends. (Before you start thinking When Harry Met Sally, it’s not like that. He’s straight and she’s gay.) She’s a nationally ranked player of Asylum, a competitive card game, and he helps with the demos on [...]

Showa Re-Released With New Covers

Drawn and Quarterly has re-released the four volumes of Showa, Shigeru Mizuki’s ridiculously detailed history of Japan from 1926-1989, translated by Zack Davisson, with snazzy redesigned covers. As I said when I previously reviewed the first volume, Although intimidating, with its doorstop size and historical focus, [it] is surprisingly readable. I found it fast-moving, with an inviting combination of personal reminiscence and an educational approach to cultural history. The price has gone up by $5 a book, but it’s been [...]

The author of the popular Chi’s Sweet Home, Konami Kanata, returns with another cute cat manga. Sue & Tai-Chan is full-color, printed left to right, for maximum English-speaking audience appeal. Sue is an elderly cat, set in her ways, when her owner takes in the kitten Tai-chan. The older feline is drawn with simple lines, while Tai-chan is fuzzy, with huge eyes, capturing his youth.
