Rose of Versailles Available for Pre-Order

In 2015, Udon Entertainment announced that they would be publishing Riyoko Ikeda’s classic shojo manga Rose of Versailles. It’s about a woman dressing as a man and protecting Marie Antoinette as commander of her palace guard. It’s very frilly and starry-eyed, as suits its original 70s period of creation, but it’s also historically significant as an influential story. In early 2018, the publisher provided an update on their publishing plans. Now, the book is available for preorder, and I know [...]

Love and Capes: The Family Way Privately Serialized

As the comic market continues to change and mature, creators and publishers are experimenting with various ways to make comic production financially viable. Thom Zahler, the creator of the superhero romantic comedy Love and Capes, began in traditional print self-publishing in 2006, putting out issues that were then collected into book formats. There are four out so far, with the most recent coming out in 2013. The last two were published by IDW, which also took over the print serialization. [...]

Oni Press Announces Sanrio Graphic Novels for “Lazy Egg”

Oni Press, which has had great success with licensed publications, has announced a new deal. They will be working with Sanrio (home of Hello Kitty and many other merchandise characters) to put out a series of comic books featuring Gudetama, the “lazy egg”. (I discovered the character at this year’s TCAF, and I found him adorable, particularly when napping on a bed of rice as sushi. You more often see him uncooked, though, as a yolk.) Oni will put out [...]

After Delay, Wynonna Earp Resumes Production

Wynonna Earp — the TV show airing on Syfy, produced by IDW, and based on a comic series — ran into some snags earlier this year. Production was delayed on the upcoming fourth season, and speculation had it that it was due to money problems at IDW Entertainment. However, in early July, it was announced that production was greenlit to start this fall, with Season 4 airing in Summer 2020. IDW was aided by more money from Syfy as “the [...]

Sanity & Tallulah

“The future is female,” they say, and nothing demonstrates that better than Sanity & Tallulah, a science fiction adventure by Molly Brooks about two smart, daring girls living on a space station. Super-creative Sanity has genetically engineered a three-headed kitten named “Princess Sparkle, Destroyer of Worlds”. Having a pet is a rule violation in such a tightly controlled environment, particularly one that’s a science experiment created using untested equipment, and Tallulah’s mother, the senior scientist on the station, grounds them [...]
