AT&T Buys Crunchyroll Owner

AT&T, who recently took over Time Warner, has now acquired Otter Media, the parent company of Crunchyroll. John Stankey, chief executive of WarnerMedia, as Time Warner has been renamed, will oversee Otter. Mr. Stankey said in a statement that AT&T planned to “harness Otter’s expertise” to strengthen its own digital assets. He did not say which ones, but Warner Bros. owns niche video companies like Machinima, which focuses on gamers, and Boomerang. And DC Universe. In addition to Crunchyroll, Otter [...]

IDW Continues Losing Leadership

Two weeks ago, the IDW CEO left. Ted Adams is going to be engaged in a new, unspecified creative pursuit. Now, in a Friday evening release (which is when companies put out news they want people to ignore), it was announced that the IDW Entertainment arm, the company making the TV shows, also will have a leadership change. David Ozer, President of IDW Entertainment, will be leaving the company to become an independent producer. Ozer and his team have been [...]

Colonial Comics: New England, 1750-1775

Colonial Comics: New England, 1750-1775 is an anthology of 18 historical comic stories, edited by Jason Rodriguez and published by Fulcrum Publishing, that aims “to focus on the people and events that tend to get ignored in American history classes.” It’s an admirable goal, and one that succeeds, opening readers’ eyes to lesser-known but involving figures and events. Stories such as “The Devil and Silence Dogood”, by J.L. Bell and Braden Lamb, humorously shows Benjamin Franklin’s early days as a [...]

Riverdale: The Complete Second Season

As a guilty pleasure TV show, Riverdale is more fun in big chunks, which makes the DVD format a great way to indulge. Riverdale: The Complete Second Season is out Tuesday. This season ran 22 episodes instead of the 13 of the first season, so the set is four discs. (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a review copy of this DVD set.) This was the season where Archie (KJ Apa) became a junior mob enforcer and leader of [...]

The Death of Superman

The Death of Superman cuts to the chase in the title — this is an animated retelling of the 1993 comic book crossover in which Superman, in order to save Metropolis, gets beaten to death by the alien Doomsday. It’s available on home video on Tuesday. (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a review copy of this Blu-ray.) A number of viewers are likely too young to remember that 25-year-old media event, and the ensuing lines and collector’s edition [...]

Horimiya Volumes 3-4

And now we’ve reached the point where the series settles down into a more typical groove in order to maintain for the long term. (The most recent book out is number 11.) They’ve introduced the friends, with each having someone to talk to at school, and the trio on the cover of volume 3 are the student council members. Those characters expand the social circle while providing some people to speculate on what the two leads, Hori and Miyamura, are [...]

Doctor Who: The Seventh Doctor #3

I don’t normally bother reviewing wrap-up issues for miniseries, but this one deserves a few notes for doing things well in unusual fashion. “Operation Volcano” began in Doctor Who: The Seventh Doctor #1, written by Andrew Cartmel and illustrated by Christopher Jones. It involves the discovery of a spaceship in the Australian Outback, a conspiracy group, alien “snakes” that possess people, and other touches that bring home the 60s time setting. Although the Doctor (the Seventh, obviously, originally played by [...]

Fence #8

The first volume of Fence is now widely available, so it seemed like a good time to check in with the continuing series. As created by C.S. Pacat and Johanna the Mad, it’s the story of a group of boys on an elite high school fencing team. Nicholas has talent but not enough training and not the right family background. Seiji has all the advantages and is inhumanly talented. They’re roommates. The last few issues have focused on various showdowns [...]
