Groovy: When Flower Power Bloomed in Pop Culture

The book Groovy: When Flower Power Bloomed in Pop Culture is quite the time capsule. Not just in its content, which is all about material from the 1960s and 70s, but that it exists at all. When I was a kid, I loved these kind of popular grab-bag histories, with weird little stories about things that happened in the relatively modern era but before I was born. This one rambles through music, notable TV shows (The Monkees and Laugh-In), movies [...]

Comic Con Trademark Officially Belongs to San Diego

Three years ago, the organization behind the San Diego Comic-Con sued the Salt Lake Comic Con for violating their trademark on “comic-con”. The folks behind Salt Lake tried to cause customer confusion between the shows and made hay out of “being bullied” by the better known show. Typical of legal activities, there was some delay, but the case has finally been decided. The verdict “found SDCC’s trademark is valid, and that Salt Lake Comic Con used it without permission.” However, [...]

WarGames to Return as Interactive Series

I adore the WarGames movie. It’s still one of the best-ever portraits of what hacking is really about (research, social engineering, and grunt work). I didn’t see the direct-to-video sequel WarGames: The Dead Code that came out ten years ago because why would I? (Did anyone? But everyone was trying to wring additional value out of intellectual property then.) Now I find out that they’re rebooting as an “interactive series” based on this trailer. The pictures of “hackers” look ridiculously [...]

DC Best Sellers Sale

Want to be up on the popular comics? DC is currently promoting a sale on digital collections that have been New York Times best-sellers. This strikes me as a good sampling of their well-known comics, but it’s also odd, since earlier this year the Times eliminated their lists of comic best-sellers. That means everything on sale — for $5.99 or $9.32 a pop, most of them — was released in 2016 or earlier. Much earlier, in the case of all [...]

Wahoo Morris Returns Via Kickstarter

More than ten years ago, Craig A. Taillefer created an intriguing comic about a struggling band and their new vocalist, who had some literal magic going on. Wahoo Morris (the band and the book) put out four issues, and just on a cliffhanger, stopped publishing as the print industry changed and the comic market exploded, making it hard for a charming little indy to get traction. It had amazing art, though, with some clever techniques to capture music on the [...]

Sabrina Show Moves From CW to Netflix

Ah, Netflix. What would we do without your apparently bottomless pile of cash to save TV shows and pilots? A couple of months ago, the CW was looking to make The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a horror-based take on the Sabrina the Teenage Witch concept from Archie Comics (source of the increasingly popular Riverdale TV adaptation). Now comes word that the CW has passed, but Netflix has so much faith in the concept that they have ordered two seasons of [...]

Peace of Mind #1

Peace of Mind begins with what a sitcom might look like in the Matrix. A woman in a VR simulation of a happy family runs out of money and is thrown away for dead. Members of some kind of underground society find her and hook her up to an interrogator, which threatens to bring doom upon them. The art is edgy but easily readable, with a scratchy style that fits the dystopian future. I get the feel, with art and [...]

Comet TV – Great for Remembering Fan Favorites

Comet TV has just begun promoting their schedule for December, which means I get to see if Earth Girls Are Easy is as much colorful fun as I remember. Jeff Goldblum (currently on-screen as a different kind of oddly colored alien in Thor: Ragnarok), Geena Davis, Charles Rocket, Jim Carrey, Damon Wayans, and Julie Brown star in this sci-fi musical directed by Julien Temple and based on Brown’s song. Earth Girls Are Easy airs on Comet Friday, December 15, at [...]
