Cruising Through the Louvre

The latest graphic novel from the international series set in the Louvre Museum is by David Prudhomme. In Cruising Through the Louvre, instead of a story centered on the many works of art the museum contains, he focuses on those who come to see it. The pages appear to be reproduced from pencils, giving everything a smudgy look, without strong definition between the viewers and the art viewed. That’s part of his point, but stylistically, the eye doesn’t have many [...]

What Did You Eat Yesterday? Returns in May

What Did You Eat Yesterday?, Fumi Yoshinaga’s series about the everyday life of a gay couple, is one of my favorite manga. I love her art, and I love the way the stories revolve around food and cooking and meals together as signs of feelings, and I love getting new ideas about how to assemble meals or prepare Japanese dishes. There have been nine volumes released so far in English from Vertical, with the most recent coming out last July. [...]

SPX Changes Exhibitor Registration Ratio

SPX, the Small Press Expo held every September in Bethesda, Maryland, has an enviable problem — too many people want to exhibit at their show. They’re at the limit of their location (which is booked through 2020) with about 270 tables available, but there’s no other similar-but-larger space available in the area, and within the limits of their show hours, it’s already a struggle for visitors to see all the vendors. Adding more exhibitors would mean less chance for anyone [...]

The New Way of Comic Publishing – Cobbling Together Whatever Works

You may recognize the name Alex de Campi from her print comics or digital evangelism or Kickstarter usage or her new Image series No Mercy. She’s also been writing a series, Semiautomagic, that’s drawn by comic veteran Jerry Ordway and has been published so far in Dark Horse Presents. The “modern, techno/Lovecraftian horror series” will be collected by Dark Horse into a 104-page graphic novel due out this summer. Alice Creed — professor, witch, and monster killer — stars in [...]

Yotsuba&! to Return in May

What exciting news! It’s been over two years since Yotsuba&! last appeared in English, with Yotsuba&! volume 12 released in November 2013. I adore these light-hearted stories by Kiyohiko Azuma about an unusual little girl, her father, and their friends. Yotsuba has her own view of the world, and her cheeriness, imagination, and openness to the new is refreshing and inspiring. Yen Press has tweeted that volume 13 is now due out in May: In case you hadn't heard, the [...]

Chi’s Sweet Home Volume 12

Chi’s Sweet Home volume 12 concludes the cute cat manga series with a lengthy exploration of what “home” means. From the beginning, Chi has been troubled by memories of her time with her mother. The kitten doesn’t always understand her wants, but she feels something’s missing, although she enjoys her life with little boy Yohei and his parents. As this volume opens, Chi and her mother come face to face. Yohei immediately sweeps up his pet/friend and runs away with [...]

Warner Archives recently released two key additions to the Hanna-Barbera Classic Collection: Atom Ant: The Complete Series and The Secret Squirrel Show: The Complete Series.
