BabyLit Primers: Teach Kids Colors, Sounds, Counting, More With Classic Literature

Thanks to publisher Gibbs Smith, I got a chance to check out a few of their BabyLit Classic Lit line of books. These board books for babies use classic literature titles to teach colors, counting, and other topics. (Site readers will not be surprised to see the titles I chose.) Sherlock Holmes in The Hound of the Baskervilles uses the moody setting to tell us that hounds howl and stairs creak, among other typically gothic items. A Christmas Carol is [...]

Cat + Crazy volume 1 header

I quite enjoyed Wataru Nadatani’s Cat + Gamer series, with its lessons about cat behavior, so I thought I’d try Cat + Crazy volume 1, by the same author. The title is accurate. Several of the characters in this manga are really out there. So much so that I don’t think I’ll be continuing with the series. They’re just too wacky. And it was worth the time — I know it’s a cliche, but I couldn’t put it down. I intended to start with only a few chapters, but I kept going to find out how everything played out. Alex Lyons, son of a famous actress, is a theatre (cause they’re English) critic who [...]

The Mythmakers: The Remarkable Fellowship of C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien

The Mythmakers: The Remarkable Fellowship of C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien by John Hendrix is an outstanding book that covers not only graphic memoir (the biographies of two famous creators of fantasy stories) but the nature of friendship, belief, faith, and storytelling. It begins with friends Mr. Lion (a talking lion is the key metaphor of Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia) and the Wizard (similarly reminiscent of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings) having tea together. They know they’re in a book, [...]
