Young Men in Love

Young Men in Love is an excellent proof that gay romance fits into any possible genre. The collection of short stories in this comic anthology range the gamut of settings and plots: pirates, a ghost story, superheroes, schoolboys, fantasy, theater kids, space adventure, action thriller, mystical, slice-of-life reconciliation, even a trans coming out. Most of them, I wanted to see more with the characters, which showed me how affecting and well-done the tales were. With stories ranging from four to [...]

Pupposites Attract Volume 2

Hono Natsuna’s Pupposites Attract volume 2 continues to be cute. (I reviewed volume 1 previously.) The new character this volume intrigues me. Chako dresses very hip and modern, but her job is very traditional. She has a Shiba Inu that wears a cute kimono-like wrap, and she calls him Aniki, which means “big brother” but can also mean, in a way, “mentor”. She listens to his guidance, too, which is odd but needed. (As with the two main characters, her [...]

Headlines, Early October 2024

Comics Mike Sterling loves Atari Force. So do I. He says: Fun sci-fi adventure expertly illustrated by José Luis García-López at the peak of his form, with the back half drawn by the also excellent Eduardo Barreto. Gerry Conway wrote most issues, and it’s a fast paced and creative comic that unfortunately was saddled with a title that likely kept folks away. Oh, and the lettering by Bob Lappan is a revelation as well. Someone in the comments calls it, [...]

How It All Ends

How It All Ends cover

Emma Hunsinger’s How It All Ends hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves, perhaps because of the title. That’s a shame, because it’s a wonderful book, an affecting, informative portrait of a kid worrying about growing up. Tara is thirteen and starting high school (ninth grade). She was skipped ahead from seventh grade, along with a couple of other kids, because she’s a “high-performing student”. That gives her a lot of anxiety over whether she’s ready for this, and how she [...]

The Troublesome Guest of Sotomura Detective Agency

The Troublesome Guest of Sotomura Detective Agency cover

I should have enjoyed The Troublesome Guest of Sotomura Detective Agency by Sakae Kusuma more than I did. There’s a grumpy detective with an “only one bed”-type pairing, but the book fell flat for me, as the various elements were underbaked. Private detective Matsuda is unlucky in both life and career, perhaps because he’s too nice a guy, or maybe he’s just a pushover. We first see him waking up naked in a hotel, where his boyfriend has deserted him, [...]
