Scott Shaw!s Comix & Stories

Scott Shaw!s Comix & Stories cover

Scott Shaw!s Comix & Stories is one of the most in-depth, thorough fan books I’ve ever seen. It came out at last year’s San Diego Con, but it’s taken me this long to write about it, because I feel that I am not enough of a Shaw! fan to do so. If you are a big fan of his work, this is a treasure trove for you, and it demonstrates just how cool small-press/self-publishing can still be. This is not [...]

Kyle’s Bed & Breakfast

I do enjoy a good soap opera comic, and Kyle’s Bed & Breakfast by Greg Fox had plenty to keep my attention. It’s the story of several gay men living together in a New England B&B. The recurring characters are Brad, a closeted minor league baseball player Richard, Kyle’s friend, fashion maven, and avid club goer Lance, high-powered ad exec who’s looking for “no strings attached” sex Eduardo, a young man whose parents threw him out because he’s gay and [...]

Blue Bottle Mystery: An Asperger Adventure

Blue Bottle Mystery

Mike Medaglia adapted Blue Bottle Mystery: An Asperger Adventure from a book by Kathy Hoopmann, and it’s illustrated by Rachael Smith. It’s a supernatural mystery during which Ben learns why he engages in repetitive movements and has trouble fitting in at school. Ben’s best friend Andy helps him navigate the teacher’s instructions, since Ben doesn’t understand sarcasm. He also is more literal than she wants him to be, and he is bullied for his routines. Then the two boys find [...]

Akane-Banashi Volumes 1-4

I learned about rakugo, the Japanese performance art of storytelling, from the series Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. One of the most intriguing plotlines for me was the one about women being banned from performing the traditional style. So when I heard about Akane-Banashi, the story of high schooler Akane and her quest to perform rakugo, I was intrigued. It’s written by Yuki Suenaga and illustrated by Takamasa Moue. Since this series runs in Shonen Jump, it skews younger [...]

The Science of Ghosts

The Science of Ghosts uses a clever metaphor effectively. It’s written by Lilah Sturges, art by El Garing. Joy is an academic parapsychologist and a trans woman in Texas. She was previously a forensic psychologist for the police, studying victims of trauma and violent crime, only now the victims she studies are dead. Her ex is still bitter over her transition, and her current girlfriend wants more time with her. She’s facing the loss of her position, as her grant [...]

History Comics: World War II: Fight on the Home Front

History Comics: World War II: Fight on the Home Front cover

The book’s subtitle is key to understanding how this non-fiction history graphic novel is different from other stories of World War II. History Comics: World War II: Fight on the Home Front tells stories of those living through the early 1940s in the United States, with special focus on women, kids, and people of color.

The Misadventures of Ellery Queen

The Misadventures of Ellery Queen header

When I discovered The Misadventures of Ellery Queen, I thought, "of course this book has to exist." It's a collection of pastiches, parodies, and other stories inspired by the fictional detective Ellery Queen and his creators, Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee.

Harry Dickson Volume 1: Mysterion

I tried Harry Dickson Volume 1: Mysterion because it was billed as "part Sherlock Holmes, part The X-Files". The second half of that comparison seems accurate, but I'd deem it more Agatha Christie than Doyle, even though the character was billed as "the American Sherlock Holmes" in his pulp days. Still, it's an enjoyable mystery adventure, emphasis on the adventure.

My Thoughts on the Doctor Who Relaunch

I was thrilled to be part of the Beat’s Doctor Who season 14 roundtable. There are spoilers galore, of course, around Ncuti Gatwa’s first run as the Doctor. Several of us discussed our thoughts on the season finale, “Empire of Death”, our favorite episode and moment of the season, what our hopes were for the next season, and more.

Cat + Gamer Volume 5

In Cat + Gamer volume 5, the second cat, Soboro, who joined the family in volume 4, has settled in. That brings this series back to what appealed to me about the first volume: continuing comparisons of raising healthy, happy kitties and gaming activities.
