Impossible People: A Completely Average Recovery Story

Julia Wertz’s latest autobiographical comic puts all the rest of them — Drinking at the Movies, Museum of Mistakes (to be rereleased next month), The Infinite Wait and Other Stories — into new context. Impossible People: A Completely Average Recovery Story is 300-plus pages of deceptively simply, impressively readable comics about her finally acknowledging her alcoholism and how she decided to change her life. Her journey isn’t always inspiring or straightforward, but it’s honest and relatable. Wertz starts the book [...]

Self-Published Good Omens Graphic Novel Announced

As longer-term site readers know, I loved the Good Omens TV show. Season 2 now has a release date (July 28), and the latest news is that Neil Gaiman, the Terry Pratchett Estate, and Colleen Doran are creating a graphic novel version that will be self-funded via Kickstarter. Doran, a long-time co-creator of other projects with Gaiman, will be adapting and illustrating the work. She’s a great choice. Particularly since the characters aren’t being drawn as likenesses, as that would [...]

Holmes Coming

I’m a fan of “Sherlock Holmes in the modern era” stories. I love the way they illustrate how the detective character is timeless while making entertainment out of the culture clash between the Victorian era and today. The latest version I’m aware of is the novel Holmes Coming, published at the end of 2022. Dr. Amy Winslow, through a complicated series of events, winds up being present when an earthquake awakens a crazy man from a steampunk laboratory. She takes [...]

Sheffield Holmes, Adventure in a New Generation: About Major Holmes & Captain Watson

This article originally appeared in Sherlock Holmes magazine issue #11, Winter 2022/23. Writer Jeff Rider launched the original Sherlockian comic book, Major Holmes & Captain Watson, via crowdfunding. The four-issue miniseries, illustrated by Ismael Canales, funded through two rounds in fall 2020 and spring 2021. It’s the story of how in 1914, Major Sheffield Holmes, nephew of Sherlock and “Uncle Mike”, and the American Captain Imogen Watson solve a murder that has repercussions for a coming global war. The book [...]

I’m on the News Talking About Free Comic Book Day

One of the local channels, NBC 15, sent a camera to Westfield Comics for Free Comic Book Day yesterday. Here’s the coverage on their website, where I’m quoted in the text article. The video there aired at 9 PM. I’m not in it, but I was in the 10 PM video, as seen here.

Returnability Returns at Oni Press

Oni Press, promoting the release of Lamentation #1, has announced both returnability and a secret bonus initiative variant cover. They’re acting on the principle that selling to comic readers means selling to retailers first. Launching this month, Lamentation is a three-issue horror miniseries written by Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun), illustrated by Arjuna Susini (Made Men), and colored by Hilary Jenkins. Each issue is 48 pages with a cover price of $6.99 US. Publishers have begun experimenting with sizes and [...]

It’s Free Comic Book Day Today!

Today is the national comic book store holiday, Free Comic Book Day! Stop by a participating retailer to get some free comics — and maybe buy something, as retailers do put money into this promotion. I’m happy that my local store, Westfield Comics, is one of those participating in the Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania giveaway. To promote the movie’s release on disc on May 16, Disney and Marvel are giving away 800 “ant-sized Blu-rays”. 16 comic book stores will [...]

Animal Rescue Friends

Young readers might enjoy these slight stories about kids helping animals, but overall, Animal Rescue Friends is bland. It’s written by Gina Loveless and Meika Hashimoto and illustrated by Genevieve Kote. Maddie finds a lost dog in the park and takes it home. Since her apartment building doesn’t allow pets, she has to take it to Animal Rescue Friends. She starts volunteering as a way to keep seeing the animal. She and another volunteer fight, which leads to a horse [...]
