DC Can’t Let Go of Cities Being More Important Than Characters

Word of another DC TV show exclusive to the coming DC digital subscription service has just broken. In addition to the live-action Titans and the animated Harley Quinn show and Young Justice season 3, in 2019, the service will air a 13-episode season of the live-action Metropolis. Yes, in the tradition of Gotham (which has four seasons under its belt, so nothing to sneeze at) and the upcoming Krypton, the city gets star billing. Because that way you don’t have [...]

Titan’s Doctor Who Comics Going on Hiatus

Looking at the last few Previews catalogs, in the Titan Comics section, I found it interesting to note that there were fewer Doctor Who comic issues offered. In December, we could order The Tenth Doctor Year Three #14 (DEC171835, which is labeled the end of that run and is due out at the end of February) or The Twelfth Doctor Year Three #13 (DEC171838, which is also labeled a conclusion and due out March 7). In January’s catalog, there are [...]

SP Baby Volume 2

What an unfortunate time to be publishing a series with so much “humor” dependent on sexual harassment and treating women as property. Thankfully, the series is over with this volume. I didn’t think it was possible, but our “lead”, Tamaki, becomes even more of an object in SP Baby volume 2. Her crush and neighbor faces off with her boss while she’s sick, basically handing her off while she blushes and dithers. Her boss, called master, continues to grab and [...]

Suicide Squad Gets Another Movie — in the DCU Animated Universe

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced the next original animated DC universe movie. Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay will be available on April 10 on Blu-ray Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack, and DVD with an earlier digital release on March 27. The Suicide Squad have previously been animated in Batman: Assault on Arkham, but that was set in the videogame universe and had a different voice cast. This won’t be your typical cartoon, as Warner warns “Suicide [...]

Lady and the Tramp Gets Signature Edition

Lady and the Tramp is coming back to Blu-ray at the end of next month as a Walt Disney Signature Collection Edition, and they’ve managed to come up with some new extra features for it. The 1955 animated movie was Disney’s 15th, the story of a pampered cocker spaniel and a street-savvy mongrel dog falling in love. It was previously released as part of the Diamond Edition line in 2012 and as a 50th anniversary DVD Platinum Edition in 2006. [...]

Diary of a Douchebag

If you’re interested in comics that show you what it might be like to live a different kind of life, you should check out Nico Harriman’s Diary of a Douchebag (available on ComiXology). It’s the story of a frat guy. Willie is the type of character that gets a lot of denigration lately, blamed for all kinds of regressive, abusive attitudes. And here, he deserves it, but by letting us see what happens to Willie in comparison to how he [...]

Red Winter

I’m too young to appreciate the revolution in cinema of the late 60s and 70s, where realism became a virtue and independent, sometimes messy viewpoints were given almost as much reach as glossy, professional presentations. But that’s what I was reminded of with this interior graphic novel from Sweden. Anneli Furmark’s Red Winter is set during the late seventies, and it’s the story of a woman having an affair with a young activist, whose politics are called into question by [...]

Limerence Press Explains Gender-Neutral Pronouns in Upcoming Release

I love educational comics, particularly when they’re on topics I want or need to know more about. They’re so much more fun to read than plain text. So I’m eager to see a creative take on gender-neutral language. Limerence Press, Oni Press’ imprint for erotic and sex education comics, has announced A Quick & Easy Guide to They/Them Pronouns by Archie Bongiovanni and co-writer Tristan Jimerson. Here’s the description: Archie, a snarky genderqueer artist, is tired of people not understanding [...]

Archer Coe to Return From Oni Press

Archer Coe and the Thousand Natural Shocks was a retro-styled pulp adventure graphic novel by Jamie S. Rich and Dan Christensen. It starred a hypnotist working to stop a serial killer, and I enjoyed the twisty mystery and the quirkiness of the lead character. Now Coe is back in a new graphic novel, Archer Coe and the Way to Dusty Death. Here’s the publisher’s description: Archer Coe, master hypnotist, is back to performing by day and consulting for the rich [...]

Scooby-Doo Team-Up #34

The high point of my DC comics purchases these days is this goofy “kids’ comic” that gets the superhero cast right, i.e. as I think they should be in terms of heroism, entertainment, and good character. Imagine my glee when I saw that the latest “guest star” was the female-focused Birds of Prey. In this story by Sholly Fisch and Dario Brizuela, Batgirl and Black Canary have asked for Velma and Daphne’s help in investigating why huge mythological birds are [...]

Abbott #1

Abbott #1 is a terrific comic that I really wanted to be something else. As written by Saladin Ahmed and illustrated by Sami Kivelä, it’s the story of a black female investigative reporter in 1972 Detroit who stumbles across a supernatural killer. The publisher blurbs the story as her looking into “the work of dark occult forces… that took her husband from her.” I loved the setting, the detail, and the character, particularly seeing how she coped with reporters and [...]

Uninhabitable a Unique Look at Trying to Control Our Environment

I enjoyed reading Jed McGowan’s comic “Uninhabitable”. I wasn’t previously familiar with his work, although I see that he has released a graphic novel, Lone Pine, with AdHouse Books. But how can you pass up a gorgeously illustrated free read? The content of “Uninhabitable” made me think about control, and how much we think we can change about our world, and having to accept that some things may not go as intended but life goes on. That’s a good message [...]

Your Black Friend Now Animated

Ben Passmore‘s Ignatz Award-winning comic Your Black Friend (described as “a letter from your black friend to you about race, racism, friendship and alienation”) has now been animated, with narration by Passmore. It’s only three minutes, but it’s a powerful three minutes, so give it a watch. Animation was done by Krystal Downs and Alex Krokus of Doggo Studios, who did a great job capturing the look and feel of the comic. Publisher Silver Sprocket will be releasing a hardcover [...]

Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World

There’s been quite the trend lately in collections of short write-ups of women in history you may not have heard of, so I didn’t have high expectations for Pénélope Bagieu’s Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World. I should have had more faith — I found myself surprised and enlightened by how many of these women I hadn’t heard of, and the amazing things they did. (First Second has previously translated Bagieu’s fiction graphic novel Exquisite Corpse and her fictionalized [...]

Star Scouts: The League of Lasers

I enjoyed Mike Lawrence’s Star Scouts when it came out last year, so I was thrilled to see that there’s a sequel. Star Scouts: The League of Lasers opens by reminding us of Avani and her interstellar friends. She’s been invited to join the League of Lasers, an elite club for star scouts. While on a try-out mission for membership, Avani gets to put all her scout skills into practice when her smart-aleck spaceship crash lands. Those skills include patience [...]

Science Comics: Robots and Drones: Past, Present, and Future

The Science Comics series of non-fiction educational graphic novels is usually outstanding, but I found Robots and Drones: Past, Present, and Future (written by Mairghread Scott (Transformers) and illustrated by Jacob Chabot (SpongeBob Comics)) a rare misfire for the line. Perhaps it’s a reflection of my relative lack of interest in the topic, but I didn’t find this installment as entertaining, informative, or frankly, good as many of the others. It’s narrated by Pouli, a mechanical bird and “the first [...]

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War Volume 1

Two cynical kids, the smartest in their class, are convinced that every couple has an imbalance of power. They like each other, but since neither wants to lose at anything, neither will be the first to admit their feelings. That’s the premise of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War volume 1 by Aka Akasaka, that “the one who falls in love first loses!” The chapters revolve around the two scheming to force or trick the other into admitting interest. I found it [...]

Spectacle

There are good mash-ups, and there are great ones, ones that make you wonder “how terrific! why haven’t I seen this combination before?” Megan Rose Gedris’s Spectacle is great, combining life in the circus, steampunk touches, a ghost sibling, and a murder mystery. Anna is the practical twin, creator of a steam-driven conjecture engine that can predict future events using statistics to 78% accuracy. Ironic, then, that she tells fortunes, knowing that they’re trickery. Kat is the twin liked by [...]

The Young Master’s Revenge Volume 1

Meca Tanaka’s previous series, Meteor Prince, was a goofy take on “love with a supernatural creature” manga. Here, she tackles the “we knew each other as children and now meet again” genre with similarly silly results. The Young Master’s Revenge stars Leo Tachibana, returning to Japan to start high school. The decade he spent out of the country, he fixated on revenge on Tenma, whose family has suffered a decline. While Leo’s father’s fashion business has since made them rich, [...]

New Shoes

Many comic artists have moved into creating children’s books, including Ivan Brunetti, Kate Beaton, and Andy Runton. There’s not that much difference between the two formats, mostly a matter of whether the words appear in balloons or as captions. Children’s books tend to be shorter and focus on the images. Sara Varon has also put out children’s books, which isn’t surprising, since her style is so welcoming and she tends to draw humanoid animals or ambulatory treats. Her newest book, [...]

Gothic Tales of Haunted Love

Gothic Tales of Haunted Love is Hope Nicholson’s (The Secret Loves of Geek Girls) latest Kickstarted anthology, now available for order through your local comic shop. And it’s a great concept — inspired by the short-run early 70s comic genre of gothic romance, which featured spooky old houses, tragic young women in danger, and the potential of ghosts, a variety of creators have created new stories with today’s attitudes. There are 20 stories included, co-edited by S.M. Beiko, plus some [...]

It’s Never Too Late to Say Sorry: Artist Apologizes for Work on Marvel Mangaverse

Would that more people had the willingness to reexamine their past actions and recognize changed viewpoints… Lea Seidman Hernandez (Cathedral Child, Rumble Girls: Silky Warrior Tansie) drew an exoticized revamp of The Punisher for the Marvel Mangaverse event back in 2002 (when comics were $2.25!). Those event books have recently been reprinted (although I can’t imagine why anyone thought that would be a good idea; people have been asking for Marvel to better support the bookstore market for years, but [...]

Sleepless #2

It’s not really fair to judge a comic by its first issue. That’s the one everyone spends extra time and effort on to make a great first impression. So when I find a great second issue, that bodes well for enjoying a comic for the long run. Sleepless #1 set up the basics of the premise; in this second issue, Sarah Vaughn and Leila del Duca expand on the premise by showing us Princess Poppy trying to find out who’s [...]

Audubon: On the Wings of the World

Audubon: On the Wings of the World — written by Fabien Grolleau and illustrated by Jérémie Royer — is a handsome historical hardcover that gives a stunning portrait of the American wilderness in the early 1800s. It also reminds us what artists may suffer when driven by creativity, as well as the sacrifices of those around them. John James Audubon is still known today for his gorgeous paintings of the birds of North America. Instead of the stiff scientific art [...]
